OVERGROWTH
a vessel series
As a glass artist, I am interested in creating functional glassware such as bowls and vases. As I began to push the boundaries on my design, the functionality of my work was often compromised, resulting in pieces that I loved but could not comfortably use.
In this series, titled “Overgrowth,” I explore this tension between functionality and expression. I draw inspiration from the conflict between man-made objects and forces of nature; remnants of functional glassware are overtaken by chaotic elements such as holes, fragments, cuts, and twists which limit or obliterate their intended function, creating opposing forces within each piece.
Hot glass is a material capable of great elegance and precision, while organically lending to molten chaos; I use these properties to express my own conflicts as I explore craft, design, expression, and control.
